Studied at the Paris Conservatory under Lauent (piano), Reber (harmony), Savard and Ambrose Thomas (composition). Professor of composition at the Paris Conservatory, 1878-96. Composed operas, orchestral suites, overtures, oratorios, &c. b. Montaud, near Saint-Étienne, France, May 12th, 1842; d. Paris, Aug. 13th, 1912.
