Biography of Sir A. Herbert Brewer

Brewer, Sir Alfred Herbert. F.R.C.O. (1897), Mus.B. (Dublin, 1897), Mus.D. (Cantuar, 1905), Hon.R.A.M.; knighted, 1926. Chorister in Gloucester Cathedral, 1877-80; studied at Gloucester Cathedral School; Exeter College, Oxford; pupil of Dr Charles Harford Lloyd; studied at the Royal College of Music, London, under Sir Walter Parratt, Sir Frederick Bridge and Sir Charles V. Stanford. Organ scholar of the Royal College of Music, London; assistant organist of Gloucester Cathedral, 1880-82; organist of St. Catherine’s, Gloucester, 1881-82; St. Mary-de-Crypt’s, Gloucester, 1881-82; St. Giles', Oxford, 1882-83; organ scholar of Exeter College, Oxford, 1883-85; organist of Bristol Cathedral, 1885; St. Michael’s, Coventry, 1886-92; organist and master of music at Tonbridge School, 1892-96; assistant organist of Gloucester Cathedral, 1896; organist there, , 1897-1928; the Gloucester Shire Hall. Conducted the Gloucester Festival, 1897. Composed church music, part-songs, an operetta, organ music, &c. b. Gloucester, England, June 21st, 1865; d. there, Mar. 1st, 1928.

Elgar, Sir Edward William. Hon.Mus.D. (Cantab, 1900); knighted in 1904; order of merit, 1911. Studied violin with Pollitzer, 1877. Organist of St. George’s (R.C.), Worcester, 1885-89. Bandmaster at the County Lunatic Asylum, Worcester, 1879-84; conducted the Worcester Amateur Instrumental Society, 1882; professor of music at Birmingham University, 1905-06; master of the Kings Music, 1924; violinist. Composed symphonies, cantatas, military marches, overtures, concertos, orchestral, instrumental and choral music, songs, &c. Son of W. H. Elgar b. Broadheath, near Worcester, England, June 2nd, 1857; d. Worcester, Feb. 23rd, 1934.
