Biography of Camille Saint-SaënsSaint-Saëns, Charles Camille. Hon.Mus.D. (Cantab, 1893); Commander, Legion of Honour, 1894. Pupil of Stamaty (piano) and Pierre Maleden (harmony); studied at the Paris Conservatory under Stamaty (piano), Maleden (theory), A. P. F. Boëly, François Benoist (organ), Reber (composiiton), Gounod (composition) and Halévy (composition); gaining organ prize, 1851;. Organist of St. Séverin’s, Paris; St. Méry’s, Paris, 1853-57; La Madeleine, Paris, 1858-77. Professor of piano at the Niedermeyer School, Paris, 1861-65. Composed symphonies, operas, ballets, incidental music, masses, odes, hymns, symphonic poems, concertos, chamber, piano and music, &c. b. Paris, France, Oct. 9th, 1835; d.
